I’m sorry. Let me clarify on the question of what backyard birds eat during the winter?
Of course some birds fly south. But chickadees for instance, don’t. And I know they sort of hibernate for a couple of weeks at a time if necessary. My question is this – what do they eat when they do eat? There are no seeds or berries or insects. There are no birdfeeders. Everything is covered with snow and frozen. Do they “eat” snow for water? I’m very curious as to what they actually eat when they do eat. Sometimes winter lasts five to six months with no growth or warmth.

There is a robin nest in my backyard and there is a problem?
There is a bird nest in my backyard and the mom bird is not there and its all ready 9:45 pm so maybe somehing happend to it , and we found a injure bird in my backyrad too and we took him/her to the shelter.
Is it normal that ther mom isn’t there or should i do something?

Do you find birds fascinating?. What is your favorite species of bird and why?
I was just wondering if anyone out there finds birds as incredibly beautiful and fascinating as I do, I really am astounded sometimes by the sheer diversity of bird species on this planet and how unique and specialised birds can be.. and how many different songs and sounds they all make. I really love watching birds and listening to them, finding out what species they are etc, the bird world never ceases to amaze me! If I had to pick just one favorite I guess it would have to be the Common Loon because they are so pretty and make the most beautiful sounds…. Whats your favorite bird species and why??

Does anyone else have a squirrel problem?
I live in a city neighborhood with several mature trees. Also, since it is an older neighborhood, the power lines are above ground and strung from the pole to the house. Apparently, this is makes my yard/house a haven for squirrels!! I have tons of them and they seem to be constantly ravenous. They chew through my plastic garbage bin to get to the trash bags and even dig holes several inches deep under the side wall of my garage to get to the trash bins inside the garage!! They dig up flowers and shrubs and forget about birdfeeders!!! They jump from trees onto freestanding feeders!! They are like little monkeys!! I really hate to surrender my yard – I love planting flowers and shrubs and would love to attract birds to my yard as well.
Any suggestions on how to get rid of them? Trapping seems silly because there will be others to take their place.
