What is a good bird house or bird treat to put outside in the trees?
Question by sandy j: What is a good bird house or bird treat to put outside in the trees?
I leave near a trail and noticed a lot of cardinal, and thought I could put out a small bird house or bird seeds, but what would attract these type of birds. I would like to hide something in the trees so only I know it is there.

I’m not sure what attracts those particular birds, but I know that there are many things birds like such as cheese, porridge oats, and any type of cooked meat or potato so you could try putting some of them out.

Can you buy antimalarial drugs without a prescription in Ecuador?
Question by sngcanary: Can you buy antimalarial drugs without a prescription in Ecuador?
Some friends of ours are going birdwatching in Ecuador in Sept. We have been before, but didnt worry about it. They are wondering if they should take the drugs with them or if they can buy them in Quito.

I’m pretty sure you can buy them down there without a prescription. If they have trouble in one of the big chain pharmacies, tell them to try a small local pharmacy.

How do I keep birds from eating flowers in my container garden?
Question by Violet777: How do I keep birds from eating flowers in my container garden?
I have also seen squirrels and chipmunks, so I bought Shake Away–it seemed to work for the most part if I keep putting it out there. I also bought a pinwheel and some hologram ribbon that is supposed to keep birds away, but these have not worked–the birds keep going into the containers. I’ve replaced some of my flowers already, and when I see that they’ve been dug up (sometimes they’ve been removed completely and put on the ground) I just replant and hope that the roots take hold again. I have always lived on the second floor with a porch garden, and never had problems like this, even though there were a lot of birds. Now I’m on the first floor and I can’t get them to stay away. There were a lot of neighbors that had bird feeders, and management requested they be removed because the squirrel problem was getting worse. Are they so hungry now they are going for the flowers? I cannot put moth balls out, since they cause me to have an asthma attack. Any suggestions would help!

You can try sound at different intervals–loud bangs or such to scare the little buggers away. Of course there is always my huskies!!! Or maybe a cat–my Murphy hunts extremely well and chases all the birds from the lawn!
Birds are tough because you are not always there to shoo them away. My daughter just emailed a picture of a nest of hatchlings in her hanging annual plant off her front pourch. They do not harm the flowers, just nest between them.
Also you may try to go a season without any containers to see if they forget about you next year!
may you should feed them so they leave the flowers alone!!
In any event good luck! Jane

What is the best/your favorite bird guide?
Question by Alli: What is the best/your favorite bird guide?
I’m looking to buy a new bird guide. I need one small enough to carry with me when I go birdwatching but large enough to contain a good amount of info regarding the habits of the birds. I live on the East coast of the US, if that helps.
So, what are your favorite bird guides? Which would you say is the best?

Some of my favorites are The National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds, The Sibley Field Guide To Birds, and The National Wildlife Federation Field Guide to Birds of North America. Those three books have all the information you’ll ever need to help identify North American bird species. They have excellent photos, descriptions, maps, and bird checklists. The National Audubon Society has a book that has only the Eastern North American Birds in it, if that’s all you’re interested in. David Allen Sibley is the author.

What types of birds are useful in eliminating mosquitoes? And how do you lure them to your yard?
Question by Dan: What types of birds are useful in eliminating mosquitoes? And how do you lure them to your yard?
I love working in my yard and have been hanging bird houses and bird feeders this year. I’ve really given no thought to particular types of birds though. Tonight I came inside because the mosquitoes were driving me crazy and it occurred to me that there is most likely some type of bird that eats mosquitoes…what are they and how do I get them to make my home their home?

Does anyone know of any parks in Paris that are good for bird watching?
Question by sngcanary: Does anyone know of any parks in Paris that are good for bird watching?
My husband and I are doing a week long trip to Paris. We will not have a car and I would like to do a morning of birdwatching somewhere in the city that can be reached by train or bus. We are staying in Montemarte. Any ideas?
Best answer:
Answer by Baiocchi
Try those the two biggest parks :
- Bois de Boulogne (South West)
- Bois de Vincennes (South East)
Or inside Paris Montsouris Park (14e arrondissement) and Buttes Chaumont (19e). But they’re not big…

what would be good nature activities for the blind?
Question by Nickname: what would be good nature activities for the blind?
I’m working at a camp for the blind/visually impaired, and I need some ideas for nature activities!
I’m head of the nature program.
I already have birdwatching, plant and leaf identification, tracking, and a sensory path.
Do you have any good ideas for me?

Answer by Rainiqui
What about a “Smells of Nature” afternoon?
You could put a sample of each of the following (below) into a small container that could be picked up and smelled – no touching allowed. Then each group member takes turns identifying the various smells. As the leader, you could switch up the order of the containers to eliminate the possibility of one person memorizing another person’s answers.
You could make up a chart such that you could check off who identified which smells correctly.
You might use samples of pine, damp earth, pond water, wet bark, mushrooms, leaves, wild berries, flowers, rainwater, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, carrots, rocks, grass, and partially burned wood (from a campfire). You know the camp better than me so I’m sure you could come up with even more ideas for samples.
