How do I keep ants away from my hummingbird feeders?

feeders hang from metal “shepherd’s crooks” which are secured in the ground. Feeders are about 5 feet above the ground and ants climb up the “crooks” and get right into the feeders.
Don’t want to use poison and take a chance on it getting into the hummingbird nectar.

How do wild birds locate the birdseed in my bird feeder?

I fill the feeder. The first day, there are no birds. The next day, there are dozens. Is it smell? Sight? Some high-tech device that they purchased at Radio Shack? I looked around on the Internet for an answer, but could find nothing definitive. Any bird-lovers out there who can solve this mystery for me?
