Product Description

Grab a front row seat for the sights and sounds of feeding, nesting, and bathing birds right in your backyard using these tips shared by experienced birders. Whether the aim is to attract tiny hummingbirds or large and raucous blue jays, or lay out the welcome mat for temporary visitors stopping in during their seasonal migration, Best-Ever Backyard Birding Tips explains how to play up various landscape features and how to appreciate what happens in the backyard “birdscape.”

The book targets all skill levels, offering new birders a few basics while intriguing longtime birders with new ideas. Here readers will learn:
-why moving water, even a single dripper, will make a difference in which birds visit the yard
-how to plan an entire bird garden that offers food, shelter, and water for bathing and drinking
-what seeds and foods appeal to birds at different times of the season
-how to attract new species of birds no matter which region of the country they live in
-what type of shelter keeps baby birds safe until they are ready to leave the nest

Birders will enjoy reading features such as “Everybody Wins” (birding practices that benefit nature and the environment) and “Budget-Wise Birding” (free or inexpensive ways to feed and attract birds). They’ll also find step-by-step illustrations for installing a water feature, building a simple tray feeder, and converting a craft-style birdhouse into a suitable residence.

I HAVE LIVED IN MY HOUSE FOR 8 YEARS. I FEED HUMMINGBIRDS AND LOVE THEM. MY NEW NEIGHBORS TOLD ME TO REMOVE MY FEEDER IN MY OWN YARD SO PIGEONS DON’T FLY OVER TO HIS HOUSE AND DUMP. I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THE PIGEONS OR WHAT THEY DO. I REFUSED TO REMOVE MY FEEDERS AND HE SAID THAT HE WAS GOING TO HIRE AN ATTORNEY TO SUE ME. I LOOK AT IT AS I CAN FEED MY HUMMING BIRDS. NEED FEED BACK PLEASE. TIRED OF PEOPLE TELLING ME WHAT I CAN AND CANNOT DO IN MY BACKYARD AND INSIDE MY HOUSE. THANK-YOU

I have a yard full of honeysuckle and the bees love it. Is there something I can do to attract more birds and butterflies? Will this deter the bees? If not, what will?
I do not want to kill the bees. There are just Soooo many.

Is legal to exterminate the neighborhood cats in my backyard if they keep killing birds at my feeders?

I am an avid birdwatcher and I have lots of feeders in my backyard (which the birds love). Unfortunately, predatory cats in the neighborhood have figured this out and they catch and kill the defenseless birds at my feeders. I believe birds have a right to life and if my neighbors are unwilling to keep their cats out of my yard, then do I have the right to kill their cats? What’s a good method of keeping neighborhood cats out of my yard?

I love the songbirds in the mornings, but I’ve quickly discovered how much bird seed they can consume! I really love watching them so how often should I refill or should I just fill it up everytime it becomes empty. (of course, I may go broke!)

How do you squirrel proof bird feeders?

I love watching the birds and filling their feeders, but I don’t enjoy watching the squirrels emptying them out. I have bought the “squirrel” proof feeders that are on springs and close the feeding holes from their weight, and I have bought the plastic bowl looking contraptions , and they don’t work… Any new ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

WIld Bird Feeding in apartment?

My neighbor downstairs hates me feeding wild birds so I stopped it. Is it Ok for me to feed them since they wait 4 me when I come back after a 2 month break. Not only that it is so cold (below 0) that they come back to me so hungry. This is such a bad situation.
I saw a baby dove with the parents running on my balcony. They come back when they see the shutters of my window open. Also the chickadees and woodpeckers simple love the food.
The squirrel is a menace I want it to stop coming here what is my best bet.
