How should I decorate my garden?

Filed under How to Attract Birds to Your Yard
I’ve recently moved to a lovely village, problem is I have a tiny from and back garden, well actually they are really yards, with no bare soil at all to work with. So I’m in the process of getting my hands on pots and planters, any size, to make my yards look more appealing!
I think I’m after a cottage garden, does anyone have any ideas on how to do this? And what plants to put in it? I also want to make a small part of it a vegetable plot. The back yard is quite shaded, but the front garden gets a lot of sunshine – when it shines that is!
I realise I’m limited with the lack of bare earth, but would it be possible for me to grow a small tree in a larger pot? I also want to attract wildlife, such as birds, butterflies, etc.
I have a trellis too, so if you know of any good perennial climbers that would be great.

Problems with neighbor, any suggestions on what to do?

We live in a small town (kind of in the country) and have a very close neighbor on only one side of our property. They have well over 5 cats that they allow to roam all over our yard. They vomit and leave hair all over our lawn, kill our plants, and leave dead birds everywhere. We’ve asked the neighbors nicely many times to keep the cats away and they always respond, “We can’t control where they go” even though they have a huge fenced in section on the other side of their house.
They also have two horses and lately have been leaving huge trailers full of manure on the edge of our property line. The smell is so repulsive and has attracted millions of flies.
We can’t even go outside on our deck or yard because there are so many flies and because we’re allergic to cats. After confronting them last week they threatened to call the police on us (for what reason I have no idea), but they never did.
Any ideas what we can do about these heinous people?
We’ve actually spent well over $100 in cat repellents and none of them have done any good. Their cats actually sit right on top of it.

Is there a way to keep grasshoppers from munching?

… on the new shoots and plants in my veggie garden ? Is there someway to encourage them to munch elsewhere ? Do they have a favourite plant to eat that I can plant elsewhere in the yard ? Or perhaps there is a kind of bird found in southern Ontario that I can try to attract to my yard to deal with them ? This may sound like a silly question, but I am against spraying any kind of chemical deterrent.
