What kind of bird is this? : Backyard Birding Guide

What kind of bird is this?

In Jacksonville, NC I saw a black duck-like bird (probably about 15 inches long), and later a whole family of them, but I can’t find out on any bird identification sites what it is. It was mainly black but when it spread its wings I could see there is a lot of white on the undersides of the wings. It also has some red around its eyes extending to its beak. Sorry, I didn’t realize it only linked to the thumbnail. This should be a bigger picture: http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2966972000074040885BpZiyY

Your pic was kinda small, but the best I can tell is a White-winged Scoter. It is crow-sized and migrates south into the Carolinas from Alaska. Did it look tired? That is quite a flight!! Maybe if you google the scoter you can get a picture and tell for sure. Bird watching is fun this time of the year, because they are migrating all over the place. Good luck!

The bigger pic is much better!! This duck is not in my Audubon Handbook, so I’d go with the Muscovy Duck as everyone elso states…This is not a wild bird, but a domesticated one. Sorry for being misleading, I’m a city girl..lol!

That is a Muscovy duck. Well known for their meat. That particular picture is a female. The males are larger and have more red on their heads. There are also more color patters. Some of them are a light brown in place of the black.
